Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ)

Jiu Jitsu, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) as it is commonly referred to outside Brazil, is a grappling orientated martial art / combat sport that evolved from it’s Japanese roots in 1920’s Brazil, and continued to evolve for many decades after until its present format.

BJJ is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that forces him or her to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless.

To control and overcome greater size, strength and aggression with lesser size and strength is the keynote of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport will gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body.

Traditionally, BJJ is taught in two styles: Gi (wearing a uniform) and No Gi (wearing regular workout clothes). BJJ with the Gi, is more for sports and competition. People who train with the Gi wear a belt that represents their knowledge and skill based on a ranking system. The belts range from white, blue, purple, and brown… before ultimately reaching the highly respected black belt.

No Gi BJJ is a style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that has been adapted to be implemented more so for the day to day lifestyle. No Gi BJJ is widely used for MMA and those who are just looking to learn practical techniques that do not depend on using the Gi (uniform).

BJJ Classes at Fight Gods MMA Academy

A brilliant coach once said: “You fight the way you train”. Since competitors are not allowed to wear a gi when fighting in MMA events, BJJ classes at Fight Gods are taught without the gi (uniform). Our No Gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes focus on ground positioning and submissions to provide a solid foundation. Students will learn how a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and choke-holds to defeat their adversary.

Getting injured is never fun. For that reason, safety during training is of the utmost importance at Fight Gods Mixed Martial Arts Academy.

The Benefits of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) Training

No Natural Talent Needed

Technique is the only proof in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. You do not need any natural talent to succeed at BJJ; hard work and perseverance are the only qualities required to climb to the top.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu develops the confidence to accomplish your goals in life. No other sport puts you in positions where – at full speed – you have to overcome size and strength disadvantages, keep cool under stress, and face your fears of confrontation and physical damage.

Physical Conditioning

People who begin BJJ often have the intention of training no more than a couple of times a week but there is so much to learn and it’s so much fun that it truly does become a lifestyle choice, with positive consequences for health, weight-loss and overall conditioning.
